The urban gardens of the Portuguese community—similar to those found in cottage gardens around the world—define and give character to many neighborhoods in North America, especially in southeastern Massachusetts.
At a time when man’s relationship to nature is increasingly strained, these Portuguese gardens reflect a cooperative spirit between their makers and their land. What’s more, these gardens give us insight into New England’s cultural ties with the Azores and mainland Portugal and reflect the ethnic character of the Portuguese community.
Urban Cottage Gardens of the Portuguese Community, explores these gardens in a vivid photographic tour of some the most colorful and attractive planned landscapes of Portuguese-American community. Created by sociologist Donna Huse and biologist James Sears, both of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, this 36-minute presentation includes more than 300 images capturing the beauty of Portuguese garden designs and discusses traditional styles, plants, and New England garden adaptations.
